Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Manhattan
We will work to explore your trauma, understand its impact on your life and your relationships and develop a sense of mastery over your experience.
PTSD and Trauma symptoms can occur as a result of being an eye-witness, through direct exposure to a life threatening event, or even hearing about the direct exposure to a life threatening event of a close family member.
This include traumatic accidents, acts of physical or sexual violence, experiences associated with first response employment and military duty and deployment.
Symptoms are persistent and include:
- Intrusive thoughts that are recurrent and involuntary
- Hyper-arousal
- Disassociation, which means being detached from your reality
- A need to avoid any and all reminders of this experience or similar experiences
- Changes in behavior and mood that at times lead to isolation or aggressive behaviors
Clients who struggle with trauma will at times seek to compensate with negative coping mechanisms such as turning to alcohol and substance abuse to deal with their memories or physical symptoms of anxiety or stress. This will ultimately compound the experience, causing severe distress at home or work.
How I work with Trauma and PTSD
As someone who may be struggling with a traumatic event, we will work to explore your experience, deconstruct its impact on your sense of security, understand how it affects not only you but your intimate and important relationships.
In psychotherapy we will work to reduce and dissipate its impact on your well being by developing goals that are specific to your experience, explore your strengths and implement them in your treatment plan of action.
